It housed the Billiard Room of the Sports Club and the Indigent Quarters on the first floor and the Association's Hall on the second floor. On the third and fourth floors were dormitories for visitors from the rural areas and abroad. Three stories were burnt down during a disastrous fire in the area on 25th July 1982, but only two were rebuilt in 1984. The objects of the Association were: 1. To foster unity among all Chinese. 2. To improve the Chinese in social matters. 3. To assist and protect Chinese whether members of the Association or not. 4. To found a place where Chinese may meet freely on equal terms. 5. To afford assistance and relief to poor, distressed or sick Chinese whether members of the Association or not. 6. Generally, to watch over and protect Chinese interests. Membership of the Association is now open (since 2001) to any person of Chinese descent who is eighteen years of age and upwards. Mr. J. C. Luck was the last Guyanese Chinese to hold the post of President of the Chinese Association. Since then, all the Presidents are required by the Constitution of the Association to be conversant in Chinese and have been Chinese born in China, while the Vice Presidents were Chinese born in Guyana who did not know how to read, write or speak Chinese. The President of the Chinese Association elected in May 2004 is Huang Puyuan
